Haunted Chocolatier still has no release date, and Eric Barone has now described it as “still what I call a town game, but it’s more of an action RPG” than Stardew Valley. The chocolate shop stays. The adventuring, equipment, and boss fights get more focus. That is the short version, and it comes from a recent GQ interview reported on October 12–13, 2026 by IGN, Polygon, and 80.lv.
If you were waiting on this game before upgrading hardware or picking a platform, there is nothing to base that decision on yet. No date, no window.
What Barone actually said
All three outlets quote the same passage from the GQ interview:
“It is still what I call a town game. But it’s more of an action RPG — the main focus is more about adventuring, finding equipment and getting more powerful. There are monsters, there are boss fights. It’s for the people in Stardew Valley that go into the mines. That’s what I do, honestly.”
Two things matter here. First, the quote is consistent word-for-word across all three reports, so the core claim — a town game with heavier action RPG elements — is what Barone said, not a headline writer’s spin. Second, all three outlets are citing the same GQ interview. That is one source relayed three times, not three independent confirmations. I have not read the GQ piece itself; this article is based on the three outlets’ published pages.
Polygon adds a detail from the same interview: Barone has not let anyone play the game yet. “No one’s playing the game until I’m ready to show it,” he said, with a turkey-in-the-oven comparison. That quote appears in Polygon’s report only among the three outlets I checked, so treat it as single-source.
Development status

The facts, as reported:
- Announced in 2021. All three outlets agree.
- No release date. IGN: “so far without a release date.” Polygon: “still without a release date.”
- The Stardew Valley 1.7 update also has no date, and Barone is not working on it directly (IGN only). IGN’s article cuts off mid-quote on how his team handles 1.7, so anything beyond “he acts as creative director and lets the team work on it while he focuses on Haunted Chocolatier” is unverified here.
- Barone has repeatedly said he will not rush it. In June (per IGN; the outlet’s excerpt does not state the year) he posted that repeating the same update “feels kinda dumb,” and described polishing details like the chocolate recipe book UI until they are, in his words, “perfect” (IGN, quoting his posts).
- In an August blog post (per Polygon; the outlet’s excerpt does not state the year), he apologized for the length of development while saying he doesn’t want to rush and hurt the game (Polygon’s summary — I have not read the blog post itself).
- Polygon also reports Barone acknowledged early this year that he announced the game too early. Single-source again.
Confirmed vs. paraphrase vs. unverified
Most coverage of this game mixes Barone’s direct quotes with outlets’ own summaries. Here is the breakdown for this round of reporting:
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| “Town game, but more of an action RPG” — adventuring, equipment, boss fights | Direct quote, consistent across IGN, Polygon, 80.lv (all citing GQ) |
| No release date; Stardew Valley 1.7 also undated | IGN and Polygon for the release date; 1.7 detail is IGN only |
| Announced 2021 | Reported by all three outlets |
| Nobody has played it yet; turkey analogy | Polygon only |
| August blog apology for development length | Polygon’s summary of the blog post |
| “Metaphysical” setting | Quoted by IGN and 80.lv; direct attribution to Barone unverified (GQ original not read) |
| “Way bigger” than Stardew Valley; written from scratch; darker, “creepy” tone with ghosts and a castle | 80.lv re-citing earlier coverage — unverified here, do not treat as confirmed |
That last row is the catch. “Way bigger” and “creepy” circulate widely, but in the pages I checked they trace back to 80.lv summarizing earlier reports, not to anything Barone said in this interview. If a claim about this game doesn’t trace to his own words, it’s worth being suspicious of it.
What this means for you

Barone’s own framing settles the “is it just a combat game?” question: the chocolate business and town life remain, with more weight on exploring, fighting, and progression. Whether that balance holds in the finished game is unknowable now — he has said parts of the game will likely change before release, which is part of why he isn’t showing it early.
On timing: there is no date and no window. Any release prediction or countdown you see is speculation without a source. When new information appears, it will most reliably come from Barone’s own blog and social posts — check those before trusting a summary.
