The iPhone Duo launches Friday, Oct. 23, starting at $1,999 in the US — confirmed on Apple’s own product page, which also lists pre-orders starting 5:00 a.m. PT on Oct. 16. If you skip AppleCare+, Apple charges $999 to repair the inner display and $1,499 for “other damage,” figures reported by 9to5Mac from Apple’s website on Oct. 14, 2026. On a phone this expensive, the case for AppleCare+ is stronger than on most iPhones.

One caveat before the numbers: the repair fees below are cited as reported by 9to5Mac. Apple’s official repair-pricing page could not be opened directly while preparing this article, so treat these as conditional until you verify that page yourself. All figures are in US dollars; pricing for other regions is not confirmed here.

Repair costs without AppleCare

Reference photo of two smartphones with cracked screens placed on an orange background. It is not a photo of the iPhone Duo's internal display or the actual $999 repair cost, but a generic scene evoking the topic of repair costs without an application.

Here are the estimated out-of-warranty service costs for the iPhone Duo, as listed on Apple’s website (via 9to5Mac):

DamageEstimated cost
Cover layer damage$49
Back glass damage$199
Battery service$229
Rear camera damage$229
Outer display damage$379
Outer display and back glass damage$509
Inner display damage$999
Other damage$1,499

These are “estimated” for a reason. Apple uses these fees for its own repairs, but says Apple Authorized Service Providers can set their own fees and provide their own estimates. The number you’re quoted may differ.

With AppleCare+ ($19.99/month on top of the purchase price, per 9to5Mac), the math changes. A few examples from the same source: theft or loss drops to $149, battery service is free, front display damage is $29, and inner display damage is $99.

The comparison that matters: a cracked inner display costs $999 without coverage and $99 with it, plus the monthly fee. Whether that tradeoff makes sense depends on how long you keep the phone and how you treat it — the sources don’t provide data on failure rates, so that part is your call.

Price and release date

9to5Mac reports the Duo starts at $1,999, with the 2TB model at $3,199. The Oct. 23 release date and the Oct. 16 pre-order window are now confirmed directly on Apple’s product page, so the earlier single-source caveat no longer applies to the date. The screen pairing — a 5.4-inch outer display with a 7.6-inch folding display — appeared first in a paid Sauce Labs press release; Apple’s page confirms the 7.6-inch inner display and describes the outer display as covering more than 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro’s screen area, which is consistent with but not identical to the 5.4-inch figure, so treat the exact outer size as reported.

What’s missing from the Duo, and using two iPhones

According to Macworld’s report, the Duo has no Face ID and no rear telephoto camera — compromises Apple made to keep the foldable thin. Note this comes from media reporting, not from Apple’s official spec sheet, which was not checked directly.

If that pushes you toward owning two iPhones, iOS 27 includes a feature called iPhone Handoff. It lets two iPhones share the same phone number and eSIM, working much like a cellular Apple Watch: the phones detect which one is in use and the eSIM activates there automatically. Macworld describes this as solving the old problem that your phone number never synced between two devices, forcing you to pay for two lines.

The catch: Macworld reports the feature currently works only for T-Mobile customers in the US and Telekom customers in Germany, with T-Mobile charging an extra $5 per month, and AT&T suggesting it has no near-term plans to support it. Nothing here confirms the feature works in Korea or with Korean carriers. Check with your carrier before counting on it.

The foldable screen and your apps

Apple’s page describes reimagined iOS 27 experiences for the foldable — Split View multitasking, StandBy on the outer display, and new camera features such as Duo Preview and Duo FaceTime. How badly existing apps actually break on the foldable screen is a different question, and this article does not answer it: no independent source or accessible research was found on real-world app compatibility, so that question is out of scope here rather than answered with guesses. The practical step: after launch, open the apps you use most on a display unit before deciding whether the foldable form factor works for you.

What this article doesn’t cover

Reports that Apple increased Duo orders by 30%, that Alibaba’s AI models were cleared for Apple Intelligence in China, and that Apple offers a “Get Ready” pre-order tool circulated this week, but the underlying sources could not be reviewed, so none of those claims appear here as fact.
