Apple’s first foldable iPhone is no longer a rumor
Apple has announced the iPhone Duo. In South Korea, Apple lists a starting price of ₩3,290,000. Preorders open at 9 p.m. KST on Friday, October 16, 2026, and sales begin October 23. That changes the useful question: not “Will a foldable iPhone exist?” but “What should you verify before committing more than ₩3 million to a first-generation foldable?”
This guide was checked October 13, 2026 against Apple’s Korean announcement, technical specifications, and online store. The device is not yet on sale; the preorder and availability dates are upcoming. We have not tested a retail unit.
South Korean price and dates
| Storage | Apple Korea price | Difference from 256GB |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | ₩3,290,000 | — |
| 512GB | ₩3,590,000 | +₩300,000 |
| 1TB | ₩4,190,000 | +₩900,000 |
| 2TB | ₩5,090,000 | +₩1,800,000 |
Apple’s Korean store lists the four capacity prices above. The 256GB model is ₩1,300,000 above the iPhone 18 Pro’s ₩1,990,000 starting price—a 65.3% higher entry price. That is a comparison of starting prices, not a claim that the two phones have equivalent screens, cameras, or storage configurations. Apple lists a standard Duo case at ₩119,000 and a folio accessory at ₩199,000, so include a case only if you actually plan to buy one.
The United States entry price is $1,999 for 256GB. Do not convert that directly into a Korean “fair price”: local tax treatment, warranty, promotions, storage options, and the official Korean list price differ.
What the foldable design changes in daily use
| Use question | Published detail | What to check in person |
|---|---|---|
| Will the inner display replace a small tablet? | 7.6-inch folding OLED inside; 5.4-inch display when closed | Open the apps you actually use and see whether their layouts adapt well. |
| Can I carry it comfortably? | 254g; 5.2mm thick open and 11.3mm closed | Hold it closed one-handed, then try typing and reaching across the outer screen. |
| Can I use two apps side by side? | Apple describes new iOS 27 multitasking for the larger screen | Try your own messaging, browser, notes, and work apps; app behavior can differ. |
| Is the crease invisible? | Apple says the nano-texture surface reduces glare and crease visibility | Inspect the display under bright and angled light. “Less visible” is not “absent.” |
The phone has a 48MP main and 48MP ultra-wide rear camera system, a 12MP Center Stage front camera, A20 Pro, and a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple lists IP68 under controlled test conditions, but also cautions that water resistance can decrease with wear and that liquid damage is not covered by its warranty. A rating is not a reason to expose an expensive folding screen or hinge to water.
One purchase detail that can stop activation: eSIM only
iPhone Duo does not accept a physical SIM card. Apple’s Korea carrier list currently names SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+ for eSIM activation, but the activation method and eligibility depend on the carrier and plan. Before ordering, ask your carrier how your specific line will move to the new phone—especially if you use a corporate plan, an older SIM-only plan, or a number managed by someone else.
If you are moving from Android, do not assume the eSIM transfers automatically. Apple says Android-to-iPhone eSIM transfer may require carrier assistance; a carrier may activate it digitally or provide a QR code. Keep your existing phone active until the new eSIM is working and you have verified calls, text messages, and mobile data.
Battery numbers are Apple test results, not a promise for your day
Apple lists up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display. The test conditions matter: Apple says its typical-use profile assumes equal use of the inside and outside screens, and real battery life varies with settings, network signal and usage. These figures are useful for comparing Apple’s stated test cases, but they are not independent all-day battery results. Full retail-unit testing will be more informative after the October 23 availability date.
What early hands-on coverage can—and cannot—tell you
Tom’s Guide reported a hands-on session and said the crease was difficult to see in its viewing conditions. That is a useful first impression, not a long-term crease, hinge, scratch, or drop-resistance test. Before launch, a hands-on visit can help you judge the dimensions and screen feel; it cannot settle durability over months of opening and closing. We will not turn an early demonstration into a guarantee.
A practical preorder checklist
- Choose capacity from your actual usage. Check current phone storage, large video libraries, offline media, and whether you already pay for cloud storage. The jump from 256GB to 512GB is ₩300,000; the 1TB tier is ₩900,000 more than base.
- Confirm eSIM activation with your carrier. Ask about your exact plan and transfer process before trading in or resetting your current phone.
- Try the closed and open sizes. Test one-handed typing, pockets, reading, video, and two-app work with the apps you use.
- Price protection and service before checkout. Read AppleCare+ and warranty terms for this model and ask what repair/replacement coverage applies to the inner display and hinge. Do not infer a repair price from a different iPhone.
- Decide whether the large screen earns its premium. At ₩1.3 million above the iPhone 18 Pro’s starting price, the value depends on whether you will use the inner screen often—not simply on owning Apple’s first foldable.
- If uncertain, wait for retail-unit testing. Availability starts October 23. Waiting allows longer battery, app-compatibility, and durability reviews to replace preview impressions.
Who should preorder—and who should wait?
| You are… | Reasonable next step |
|---|---|
| A frequent reader, multitasker, or video viewer who wants a pocketable larger screen | Try it in an Apple Store, confirm eSIM, and preorder only if the larger display solves a real need. |
| Happy with a recent iPhone and mainly curious about the crease | Wait for retail-unit reviews and longer-term hinge/display observations. |
| Dependent on a physical SIM or uncertain carrier support | Confirm an eSIM migration path before buying. |
| Buying mainly for camera upgrades | Compare the two-camera system with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and your actual photography needs; the Duo’s main differentiation is the foldable display. |
| Unsure about storage or accessories | Check usage first; start without optional accessories you do not need, and use the return policy terms shown at checkout. |
