Can you use Apple Pay at Walmart today?
At some U.S. Walmart and Sam’s Club locations, yes—but the public rollout is not a store-by-store guarantee. Walmart says Tap to Pay began at select locations on August 24, 2026, with a target of reaching all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026. Fuel stations are on a later track, targeted for mid-2027. Walmart’s public FAQ does not name the participating stores or publish a live location list, so a state schedule circulating online should not be treated as an official store-availability checker.
This guide was checked October 13, 2026 against Walmart’s current Tap to Pay FAQ and Google’s announcement. The dates below are rollout targets stated by the companies; we did not test a Walmart terminal or independently verify which individual stores are live.
What the published rollout actually says
| Milestone | Published scope | What it means for shoppers |
|---|---|---|
| August 24, 2026 | Tap to Pay starts being added at select U.S. Walmart and Sam’s Club locations | Some locations may accept a tap; the date does not mean every store switched on that day. |
| By the end of 2026 | Walmart’s stated target for all U.S. stores and clubs | This is a rollout target, not evidence that every terminal is already enabled today. |
| By mid-2027 | Stated target for fuel stations | Do not assume a pump accepts a phone tap just because the store registers do. |
Walmart’s FAQ names supported contactless cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Garmin Pay, and supported payment-enabled watches and wearables. It also says contactless EBT is available only in select areas. The FAQ does not provide separate national launch dates for each wallet.
How to check before you shop
- Ask the store or checkout associate. Walmart has not published a public list of enabled stores in its FAQ. Ask whether that location’s register supports Tap to Pay before relying on it.
- Look at the payment terminal when it is ready. If contactless is available, follow the PIN-pad prompts and hold your phone, watch, or contactless card near the reader. Terminal design and prompts can vary.
- Keep a backup for this purchase. Bring a physical card or be ready to use Walmart Pay, cash, or another listed payment method. A failed tap should not leave you stuck at checkout.
- Check which wallet card will be charged. Walmart says the default card selected in your digital wallet is charged. Confirm it before tapping.
For Apple Pay, add and verify an eligible card in Apple Wallet before arriving, then authenticate on your iPhone or Apple Watch and follow the terminal prompt. Google Pay users can add a preferred card to Google Wallet. Wallet setup does not prove a particular Walmart register has been enabled.
Tap to Pay is different from Walmart Pay and Scan & Go
These names describe different checkout flows:
- Tap to Pay: use a supported contactless card, phone wallet, watch, or wearable at an enabled checkout terminal.
- Walmart Pay: open the Walmart app and scan the register’s QR code. Walmart says this system uses QR rather than NFC and remains available alongside Tap to Pay.
- Sam’s Club Scan & Go: scan items in the Sam’s Club app and pay through its existing flow. Walmart’s FAQ says customers should continue using the existing Scan & Go payment experience instead of Apple Pay or another wallet inside Scan & Go.
Tap to Pay is an additional option, not a replacement for cash, card swipe or insert, Walmart Pay, or Scan & Go. Walmart says supported wallets use tokenization and Tap to Pay uses EMV security technology. That describes the payment technology; it does not mean every store has the feature enabled.
What is still unknown—and what to ignore
Walmart’s public FAQ gives three broad milestones, but it does not give a state-by-state calendar, list participating stores, or identify a count of terminals converted. We therefore removed the older article’s detailed state waves, its unnamed-state arithmetic, and claims about a specific state such as Missouri. Those details were based on secondary reporting about an internal timetable, not a public Walmart schedule, and cannot reliably answer whether your local checkout is ready.
We also found no official announcement of a customer fee or subscription charge for using this payment option. That is not a promise about the terms of every bank card or wallet; your card issuer’s normal account terms still apply. Walmart’s Tap to Pay FAQ says existing payment options remain available.
Quick decision guide
| Your situation | Best next step |
|---|---|
| You are going to a U.S. Walmart store now | Ask whether the checkout terminal is enabled; carry a backup payment method. |
| You are shopping at a Sam’s Club | Tap at an enabled regular checkout, or use the existing Scan & Go flow as usual. |
| You are at a Walmart or Sam’s Club fuel pump | Plan on another method for now; the published fuel-station target is mid-2027. |
| You use contactless EBT | Check local eligibility; Walmart says availability is limited to select areas. |
| You saw a post listing exact states and dates | Treat it as unofficial unless Walmart publishes the same store-level information. |
